The Pen
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
68:1:1nūnNun.
68:1:2waₐlqalamⁱBy the pen
68:1:3wamāand what
68:1:4yasṭurūnᵃthey write,
۝١
Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe,
68:2:2ʾantᵃyou (are),
68:2:3biniʕmaẗⁱby (the) Grace
68:2:4rabbikᵃ(of) your Lord,
68:2:5bimajnūnⁱⁿa madman.
۝٢
You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.
68:3:1waʾinnᵃAnd indeed,
68:3:2lakᵃfor you
68:3:3laʾajraⁿsurely (is) a reward
68:3:4ġayrᵃwithout
68:3:5mamnūnⁱⁿend.
۝٣
And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.
68:4:1waʾinnakᵃAnd indeed, you
68:4:2laʕalāsurely (are)
68:4:3ḫuluqⁱⁿ(of) a moral character
68:4:4ʕaẓīmⁱⁿgreat.
۝٤
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
68:5:1fasatubṣirᵘSo you will see
68:5:2wayubṣirūnᵃand they will see,
۝٥
So you will see and they will see
68:6:1biʾayyyikumᵘWhich of you
68:6:2ₐlmaftūnᵘ(is) the afflicted one.
۝٦
Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].
68:7:1ʾinnᵃIndeed,
68:7:2rabbakᵃyour Lord,
68:7:4ʾaʕlamᵘ(is) most knowing
68:7:5bimanof (he) who
68:7:6ḍallᵃhas strayed
68:7:7ʕanfrom
68:7:9wahuwᵃand He
68:7:10ʾaʕlamᵘ(is) most knowing
68:7:11biₐlmuhtadīnᵃof the guided ones.
۝٧
Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
68:8:1falāSo (do) not
68:8:2tuṭiʕⁱobey
68:8:3ₐlmukaððibīnᵃthe deniers.
۝٨
Then do not obey the deniers.
68:9:1waddūThey wish
68:9:3tudhinᵘyou should compromise,
68:9:4fayudhinūnᵃso they would compromise.
۝٩
They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].
68:10:1walāAnd (do) not
68:10:3kullᵃevery
68:10:4ḥallāfⁱⁿhabitual swearer
68:10:5mmahīnⁱⁿworthless,
۝١٠
And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer
68:11:1hammāzⁱⁿDefamer
68:11:2mmaššāʾⁱⁿgoing about
68:11:3binamīmⁱⁿwith malicious gossip,
۝١١
[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -
68:12:1mmannāʕⁱⁿA preventer,
68:12:2llilḫayrⁱof (the) good,
68:12:3muʕtadⁱⁿtransgressor,
68:12:4ʾaθīmⁱⁿsinful,
۝١٢
A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,
68:13:1ʕutullⁱⁿCruel,
68:13:2baʕdᵃafter
68:13:3ðālikᵃ(all) that
68:13:4zanīmⁱⁿutterly useless.
۝١٣
Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.
68:14:1ʾanBecause
68:14:2kānᵃ(he) is
68:14:3ðāa possessor
68:14:4mālⁱⁿ(of) wealth
68:14:5wabanīnᵃand children,
۝١٤
Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,
68:15:2tutlāare recited
68:15:3ʕalayhⁱto him
68:15:4ʾāyātunāOur Verses,
68:15:5qālᵃhe says,
68:15:6ʾasāṭīrᵘ"Stories
68:15:7ₐlʾawwalīnᵃ(of) the former (people)."
۝١٥
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
68:16:1sanasimuhuWe will brand him
68:16:3ₐlḫurṭūmⁱthe snout.
۝١٦
We will brand him upon the snout.
68:17:1ʾinnāIndeed, We
68:17:2balawnāhumhave tried them
68:17:5ʾaṣḥābᵃ(the) companions
68:17:6ₐljannaẗⁱ(of) the garden,
68:17:9layaṣrimunnahāto pluck its fruit
68:17:10muṣbiḥīnᵃ(in the) morning,
۝١٧
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning
68:18:1walāAnd not
68:18:2yastaθnūnᵃmaking exception.
۝١٨
Without making exception.
68:19:1faṭāfᵃSo there came
68:19:3ṭāʾifᵘⁿa visitation
68:19:5rrabbikᵃyour Lord,
68:19:6wahumwhile they
68:19:7nāʾimūnᵃwere asleep.
۝١٩
So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.
68:20:1faʾaṣbaḥatSo it became
68:20:2kaₐlṣṣarīmⁱas if reaped.
۝٢٠
And it became as though reaped.
68:21:1fatanādawAnd they called one another
68:21:2muṣbiḥīnᵃ(at) morning,
۝٢١
And they called one another at morning,
68:22:1ʾanⁱThat
68:22:2ᵤġdū"Go early
68:22:4ḥarθikumyour crop
68:22:6kuntumyou would
68:22:7ṣārimīnᵃpluck (the) fruit."
۝٢٢
[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."
68:23:1faᵢnṭalaqūSo they went,
68:23:2wahumwhile they
68:23:3yataḫāfatūnᵃlowered (their) voices,
۝٢٣
So they set out, while lowering their voices,
68:24:3yadḫulannahāwill enter it
68:24:5ʕalaykumupon you
68:24:6mmiskīnᵘⁿany poor person."
۝٢٤
[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."
68:25:1waġadawAnd they went early
68:25:3ḥardⁱⁿdetermination
۝٢٥
And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.
68:26:1falammāBut when
68:26:2raʾawhāthey saw it,
68:26:4ʾinnā"Indeed, we
68:26:5laḍāllūnᵃ(are) surely lost.
۝٢٦
But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;
68:27:3maḥrūmūnᵃ(are) deprived."
۝٢٧
Rather, we have been deprived."
68:28:2ʾawsaṭuhum(the) most moderate of them,
68:28:3ʾalam"Did not
68:28:4ʾaqulI tell
68:28:6lawlā'Why not
68:28:7tusabbiḥūnᵃyou glorify (Allah)?'"
۝٢٨
The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' "
68:29:1qālūThey said,
68:29:2subḥānᵃ"Glory be
68:29:3rabbinā(to) our Lord!
68:29:4ʾinnāIndeed, we
68:29:5kunnā[we] were
68:29:6ẓālimīnᵃwrongdoers."
۝٢٩
They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
68:30:1faʾaqbalᵃThen approached,
68:30:2baʕḍuhumsome of them
68:30:4baʕḍⁱⁿothers
68:30:5yatalāwamūnᵃblaming each other.
۝٣٠
Then they approached one another, blaming each other.
68:31:1qālūThey said,
68:31:2yāwaylanā"O woe to us!
68:31:3ʾinnāIndeed, we
68:31:4kunnā[we] were
68:31:5ṭāġīnᵃtransgressors.
۝٣١
They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.
68:32:1ʕasāPerhaps,
68:32:2rabbunāour Lord,
68:32:3ʾan[that]
68:32:4yubdilanāwill substitute for us
68:32:5ḫayraⁿa better
68:32:7ʾinnāIndeed, we
68:32:9rabbināour Lord
68:32:10rāġibūnᵃturn devoutly."
۝٣٢
Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."
68:33:2ₐlʕaðābᵘ(is) the punishment.
68:33:3walaʕaðābᵘAnd surely the punishment
68:33:4ₐlʾāḫiraẗⁱ(of) the Hereafter
68:33:5ʾakbarᵘ(is) greater,
۝٣٣
Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.
68:34:1ʾinnᵃIndeed,
68:34:2lilmuttaqīnᵃfor the righteous
68:34:3ʕindᵃwith
68:34:4rabbihimtheir Lord
68:34:5jannātⁱ(are) Gardens
68:34:6ₐlnnaʕīmⁱ(of) Delight.
۝٣٤
Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.
68:35:1ʾafanajʕalᵘThen will We treat
68:35:2ₐlmuslimīnᵃthe Muslims
68:35:3kaₐlmujrimīnᵃlike the criminals?
۝٣٥
Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?
68:36:2lakum(is) for you?
68:36:4taḥkumūnᵃ(do) you judge?
۝٣٦
What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?
68:37:2lakum(is) for you
68:37:3kitābᵘⁿa book
68:37:4fīhⁱwherein
68:37:5tadrusūnᵃyou learn,
۝٣٧
Or do you have a scripture in which you learn
68:38:1ʾinnᵃIndeed
68:38:3fīhⁱin it
68:38:5taḫayyarūnᵃyou choose?
۝٣٨
That indeed for you is whatever you choose?
68:39:3ʾaymānᵘⁿoaths
68:39:4ʕalaynāfrom us,
68:39:5bāliġaẗᵘⁿreaching
68:39:7yawmⁱ(the) Day
68:39:8ₐlqiyāmaẗⁱ(of) the Resurrection,
68:39:9ʾinnᵃindeed,
68:39:11lamā(is) what
68:39:12taḥkumūnᵃyou judge?
۝٣٩
Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?
68:40:2ʾayyuhumwhich of them
68:40:3biðālikᵃfor that
68:40:4zaʕīmᵘⁿ(is) responsible.
۝٤٠
Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.
68:41:2lahum(are) for them
68:41:3šurakāʾᵘpartners?
68:41:4falyaʾtūThen let them bring
68:41:5bišurakāʾihimtheir partners,
68:41:8ṣādiqīnᵃtruthful.
۝٤١
Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.
68:42:1yawmᵃ(The) Day
68:42:2yukšafᵘwill be uncovered
68:42:4sāqⁱⁿthe shin
68:42:5wayudʕawnᵃand they will be called
68:42:7ₐlssujūdⁱprostrate,
68:42:8falābut not
68:42:9yastaṭīʕūnᵃthey will be able,
۝٤٢
The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but the disbelievers will not be able,
68:43:1ḫāšiʕaẗᵃⁿHumbled,
68:43:2ʾabṣāruhumtheir eyes,
68:43:3tarhaquhumwill cover them
68:43:4ðillaẗᵘⁿhumiliation.
68:43:5waqadAnd indeed,
68:43:9ₐlssujūdⁱprostrate
68:43:10wahumwhile they
68:43:11sālimūnᵃ(were) sound.
۝٤٣
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.
68:44:1faðarnīSo leave Me
68:44:2wamanand whoever
68:44:3yukaððibᵘdenies
68:44:5ₐlḥadīθⁱStatement,
68:44:6sanastadrijuhumWe will progressively lead them
68:44:8ḥayθᵘwhere
68:44:10yaʕlamūnᵃthey know.
۝٤٤
So leave Me, [O Muhammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies the Qur'an. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.
68:45:1waʾumlīAnd I will give respite
68:45:2lahumto them.
68:45:3ʾinnᵃIndeed,
68:45:5matīnᵘⁿ(is) firm.
۝٤٥
And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.
68:46:2tasʾaluhumyou ask them
68:46:3ʾajraⁿa payment,
68:46:4fahumso they
68:46:6mmaġramⁱⁿ(the) debt
68:46:7mmuθqalūnᵃ(are) burdened?
۝٤٦
Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?
68:47:2ʕindahumᵘ(is) with them
68:47:3ₐlġaybᵘthe unseen,
68:47:5yaktubūnᵃwrite it?
۝٤٧
Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?
68:48:1faᵢṣbirSo be patient
68:48:2liḥukmⁱfor (the) decision
68:48:3rabbikᵃ(of) your Lord,
68:48:4walāand (do) not
68:48:6kaṣāḥibⁱlike (the) companion
68:48:7ₐlḥūtⁱ(of) the fish,
68:48:9nādāhe called out,
68:48:10wahuwᵃwhile he
68:48:11makẓūmᵘⁿ(was) distressed.
۝٤٨
Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed.
68:49:3tadārakahuovertook him
68:49:4niʕmaẗᵘⁿa Favor
68:49:6rrabbihihis Lord,
68:49:7lanubiðᵃsurely he would have been thrown
68:49:8biₐlʕarāʾⁱonto (the) naked shore
68:49:9wahuwᵃwhile he
68:49:10maðmūmᵘⁿ(was) blamed.
۝٤٩
If not that a favor from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.
68:50:1faᵢjtabāhᵘBut chose him,
68:50:2rabbuhuhis Lord,
68:50:3fajaʕalahuand made him
68:50:5ₐlṣṣāliḥīnᵃthe righteous.
۝٥٠
And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
68:51:1waʾinAnd indeed,
68:51:2yakādᵘwould almost
68:51:3ₐllaðīnᵃthose who
68:51:4kafarūdisbelieve,
68:51:5layuzliqūnakᵃsurely make you slip
68:51:6biʾabṣārihimwith their look
68:51:8samiʕūthey hear
68:51:9ₐlððikrᵃthe Message,
68:51:10wayaqūlūnᵃand they say,
68:51:11ʾinnahu"Indeed, he
68:51:12lamajnūnᵘⁿ(is) surely mad."
۝٥١
And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."
68:52:1wamāAnd not
68:52:2huwᵃit (is)
68:52:4ðikrᵘⁿa Reminder
68:52:5llilʕālamīnᵃto the worlds.
۝٥٢
But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
