20:83:1wamā"And what
20:83:2ʾaʕjalakᵃmade you hasten
20:83:4qawmikᵃyour people,
۝٨٣
[Allah] said, "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
20:84:1qālᵃHe said,
20:84:3ʾulāʾⁱ(are) close
20:84:5ʾaθarīmy tracks,
20:84:6waʕajiltᵘand I hastened
20:84:7ʾilaykᵃto you
20:84:8rabbⁱmy Lord,
20:84:9litarḍāthat You be pleased."
۝٨٤
He said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
20:85:1qālᵃHe said,
20:85:2faʾinnā"But indeed, We
20:85:3qad[verily]
20:85:4fatannāWe (have) tried
20:85:5qawmakᵃyour people
20:85:6minᵐafter you
20:85:8waʾaḍallahumᵘand has led them astray
20:85:9ₐlssāmirīīᵘthe Samiri."
۝٨٥
[Allah] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Samiri has led them astray."
20:86:1farajaʕᵃThen Musa returned
20:86:4qawmihihis people
20:86:5ġaḍbānᵃangry
20:86:6ʾasifaⁿ(and) sorrowful.
20:86:7qālᵃHe said,
20:86:8yāqawmⁱ"O my people!
20:86:9ʾalamDid not
20:86:10yaʕidkumpromise you
20:86:12waʕdaⁿa promise
20:86:13ḥasanaⁿgood?
20:86:14ʾafaṭālᵃThen, did seem long
20:86:16ₐlʕahdᵘthe promise,
20:86:18ʾaradttumdid you desire
20:86:20yaḥillᵃdescend
20:86:22ġaḍabᵘⁿ(the) Anger
20:86:24rrabbikumyour Lord,
20:86:25faʾaḫlaftumso you broke
20:86:26mmawʕidī(the) promise to me?"
۝٨٦
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
20:87:1qālūThey said,
20:87:3ʾaḫlafnāwe broke
20:87:4mawʕidakᵃpromise to you
20:87:5bimalkināby our will,
20:87:7ḥummilnā[we] were made to carry
20:87:8ʾawzāraⁿburdens
20:87:10zīnaẗⁱornaments
20:87:11ₐlqawmⁱ(of) the people,
20:87:12faqaðafnāhāso we threw them
20:87:13fakaðālikᵃand thus
20:87:15ₐlssāmirīīᵘthe Samiri."
۝٨٧
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Samiri throw."
20:88:1faʾaḫrajᵃThen he brought forth
20:88:2lahumfor them
20:88:3ʕijlaⁿa calf's
20:88:6ḫuwārᵘⁿa lowing sound,
20:88:7faqālūand they said,
20:88:9ʾilāhukum(is) your god
20:88:10waʾilāhᵘand the god
20:88:11mūsā(of) Musa,
20:88:12fanasīᵃbut he forgot."
۝٨٨
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
20:89:1ʾafalāThen, did not
20:89:2yarawnᵃthey see
20:89:3ʾallāthat not
20:89:4yarjiʕᵘit (could) return
20:89:6qawlaⁿa word

20:89:9lahumfor them
20:89:10ḍarraⁿany harm
20:89:11walāand not
20:89:12nafʕaⁿany benefit?
۝٨٩
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
20:90:1walaqadAnd verily
20:90:2qālᵃ(had) said
20:90:5minbefore,
20:90:7yāqawmⁱ"O my people!
20:90:9futintumyou are being tested
20:90:11waʾinnᵃand indeed,
20:90:12rabbakumᵘyour Lord
20:90:13ₐlrraḥmānᵘ(is) the Most Gracious,
20:90:14faᵢttabiʕūnīso follow me
20:90:16ʾamrīmy order."
۝٩٠
And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
20:91:1qālūThey said,
20:91:2lan"Never
20:91:3nnabraḥᵃwe will cease
20:91:4ʕalayhⁱbeing devoted to it
20:91:7yarjiʕᵃreturns
۝٩١
They said, "We will never cease being devoted to the calf until Moses returns to us."
20:92:1qālᵃHe said,
20:92:2yāhārūnᵘ"O Harun!
20:92:4manaʕakᵃprevented you,
20:92:6raʾaytahumyou saw them
20:92:7ḍallūgoing astray,
۝٩٢
[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
20:93:1ʾallāThat not

20:93:3ʾafaʕaṣaytᵃThen, have you disobeyed
20:93:4ʾamrīmy order?"
۝٩٣
From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"
20:94:1qālᵃHe said,
20:94:2yabnaʾummᵃ"O son of my mother!

20:94:7biraʾsīby my head.
20:94:8ʾinnīIndeed, I
20:94:9ḫašītᵘ[I] feared
20:94:11taqūlᵃyou would say,
20:94:12farraqtᵃ"You caused division
20:94:13baynᵃbetween
20:94:14banī(the) Children of Israel
20:94:17tarqubyou respect
20:94:18qawlīmy word."
۝٩٤
[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.' "
20:95:1qālᵃHe said,
20:95:2famā"Then what
20:95:3ḫaṭbukᵃ(is) your case,
20:95:4yāsāmirīīᵘO Samiri?"
۝٩٥
[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Samiri?"
20:96:1qālᵃHe said,
20:96:2baṣurtᵘ"I perceived
20:96:5yabṣurūthey perceive,
20:96:7faqabaḍtᵘso I took
20:96:8qabḍaẗᵃⁿa handful

20:96:11ₐlrrasūlⁱ(of) the Messenger

۝٩٦
He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the track of the messenger and threw it, and thus did my soul entice me."
20:97:1qālᵃHe said,
20:97:2faᵢðhab"Then go.

۝٩٧
[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.' And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it into the sea with a blast.
